Yesterday we celebrated Victoria Day. This holiday is named after Queen Victoria, who was born on May 24, 1819. She was queen for the British Commonwealth for over sixty years. In her honour, Victoria Day was declared in a Canadian holiday by the government in 1845. At that time, it was celebrated with picnics, parades, sporting tournaments, fireworks and cannon salutes. When Queen Victoria died in 1901, Canada’s parliament officially named the holiday Victoria Day. In 1952, the government made the decision to begin celebrating Victoria Day on a Monday. It would be observed on May 24th if that worked out, otherwise, it would be held on the Monday immediately before it.
Today, Victoria Day is a holiday throughout most of Canada and the day is marked in most cities with parades, outdoor events and activities like rodeos, camping and elaborate firework displays. Most Canadians don’t know this history because Queen Victoria ruled a long time ago. Maybe it's time to change the day to honour someone else? If you were appointed to change this holiday to honour a Canadian, who would it be? Write a short bibliography of the person so we know who they are. Then give us reasons why this person should be celebrated.

Sir Frederick Banting is the youngest man to get a noble price in medicine Dr. Banting was also a principal of discovering the insulin because his idea had launched the research and because of his prominence in the early use of insulin. But, unfortunately he died in February 21, 1941 in Musgrave Harbour.

Sir Frederick Banting was born in November 14th, 1891. The reason why that he is so special is because he was the youngest man to get a Nobel price in medicine. Dr. Banting was also a principal of discovering the insulin because his idea had launched the research, and because of his prominence in the early use of insulin. But, unfortunately he died in February 21, 1941 in Musgrave Harbour.

I think that we should have a Terry Fox day. Yes we do a Terry Fox run every year but it is not a Nation wide thing and I think it should be. The reason i think this is because he ran over 3000 miles with a prosthetic leg to raise money for cancer research and I think that should be honored as a day to celebrate. 'Terry Fox day"

Martin Luther King Jr is a man who influenced African Canadians have the same rights as Caucasians. Martin Luther King Jr passed away on April 4th 1968. His cause of death was assassination by firearm meaning he was murdered by gunshot. The man who killed Martin was Caucasian. t me that just shows disrespect to colored people. He was killed in front of a big crowd of people. This man changed society and make life fair for his race and our race didn't approve so they killed him. How is that fair? How is that right? Racism needs to stop before Caucasian's start thinking that we despise African American's and think that we are all just killing them for fun. This man was courageous and a very good speaker. He uplifted people and gave them hope.

Fedrick Banting was born on November 14, 1981 in Alliston Ontario and he is the co-discoverer of insulin to treat diabetes. His research assistants were Charles Best, and James Collip. I know someone with type 1 diabetes and can't imagine that there was a time when there was no treatment and how that would affect there family and life so i think there should be a day for him.

I think there should be Holiday for Terry Fox. I know that every year there is a day we run in his honour but I also believe there should be a Holiday to commemorate the impact he made in Canada. He was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma (bone cancer) and had his leg amputated,15 centimetres above the knee. He wanted to run across Canada to raise money and spread awareness but he was forced to stop and was taken to the hospital after 5,373 kilometres. He was then informed the cancer had spread to his lungs and he died on June 28, 1981 at the age 22.

I think Nellie Mcclung should have her own holiday because she was a Canadian author, social activist, politician and suffrage. A suffrage is the right to vote in public and political elections. She was part of social and moral reforms movements common in Western Canada in the early 1900s. Mainly through her effort in 1916 Manitoba became the first province to give women the right to vote and to run for public office. And she accomplished many other things. She was born on October 20th 1873 and died on September 1st 1951.
