Today our grade 7's persevered and completed another portion of the FSA tests. They have been working very hard at these and are halfway there!
In the afternoon students chose their projects for researching extreme environments. They will be bringing home criteria sheets so feel free to ask your child about their project. Curling Info (as taken from Ms. Hurtubise's website) Curling originated in the 16th century in Scotland, where games were played during winter on frozen ponds and lochs. The earliest-known curling stones came from the Scottish regions of Stirling and Perth and date from 1511. Now, Curling is a favourite sport of Canadians. On Monday, January 23 and 30, we are going curling at the Cloverdale Curling Rink. I think it's going to be fun. The Cloverdale Rink has been having an issue with salt coming into the lobby of their club. If it is not dealt with properly, it can and does find its way to the ice which leads to it some very serious affects on the quality and effectiveness of the curling ice. Here is what we have been asked to do to help alleviate the issue:
It is also recommended that you wear warm loose stretchy clothing (jeans are not suitable, sweat pants are best) and dress in layers (light jacket, sweater etc.). You may also want to bring a pair of gloves. Homework: Math 7: No homework Math 6: See your teachers' website Reminders: Field trips coming up: Friday, February 3rd: Curling at Cloverdale Curling Rink 12:30-2:00 Friday, February 10th: H.R. MacMillan Space Centre all day (Leave Hillcrest by 8:15, return by 2:45) Tuesday, February 14th: Skating at Cloverdale Arena 9:15-10:15 Candy Grams will be for sale out front of the office after the eating bell at lunchtime. They cost $2.00 each. Bring your change and purchase them for your friends! TOMORROW IS THE LAST DAY! P.A.R.: Go to the Core Competency Website https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca/sites/curriculum.gov.bc.ca/files/pdf/CriticalThinkingCompetencyProfiles.pdf 1. Identify what profile you think you fit into under the Critical Thinking Core Competency 2. Pick one "I can" statement from the profile that is something that you CAN do 3. Think of a time when you demonstrated the "I can" statement (for example, if it is "I can use my senses to collect evidence and make a simple judgement" talk about the time that you felt how cold it was, saw that it was raining, and decided to put on a jacket. This is my example, come up with your own!)

Today during Math our Grade 7's had their first crack at writing FSA's, the BC Ministry of Education standardized test on reading, writing and numeracy. The students showed great perseverance and grit, working through the two problems. P.A.R.: Share one thing/characteristic that makes an environment extreme, an example of an extreme environment, various weathers in extreme environments, or perhaps an example of an animal that lives in an extreme environment (be sure to say what type of extreme environment that animal lives in!) Today Division 5 went on our first curling trip! We hit the ice around noon and were taught the basics of curling. Students practiced delivering the rock down the ice and putting some curl on it!
We were also visited by our honorary guests, Julie, Kaitlyn, Ty, Cam and Myles, Mr. Stewart's grade 7's from last year. They took time to answer some questions for the grade 6/7's about what going to high school is like, as well as providing some comic relief:) As you can see, Julie and Kaitlyn are not used to their fame yet and chose to hide their faces while Ty and Cam, comfortable in the spotlight, made the most of the moment. P.A.R. 1. What was one thing you learned about someone else's object in space from watching our Paper Slide Video in the afternoon? 2. What was one thing you learned while curling, and what did you enjoy most about it? What are you going to work on next time? 3. First grade 8 to write a limerick about me in the comments gets a Skittle:) Reminders:

Unfortunately, due to recent events, personal devices are no longer to be used at any time during school hours. Students who decide to bring personal devices will place them in my locked cupboard in the morning and pick them up at the end of the day. Math 7: pg 165 #3-9. Division 5 has been hard at work completing their paper slides for our paper slide video which will be completed this week. They are learning a lot about asteroids, quasars, pulsars, comets, planets, and many other objects found in space. Soon we will be shifting our focus to the extreme environments that exist and that have been studied using various types of technology.

Today after Hockey Math, students spent the majority of the day working on their paper slide project about objects in space. In your post, guess what the specific name of the object above is. Students have each been assigned a space object and are researching them, drawing diagrams, and will be responsible for creating a single slide about which they will present.

A. Milne! Today it is the birthday of author A.A. Milne, the writer of the Winnie the Pooh stories. To celebrate we had Winnie the Pooh day and many students brought their stuffed animals. Mrs. Van even dressed up as Winnie the Pooh! It made me giggle every time she walked by the classroom.
Today students were assigned their object to present about in our paper slide show that we will be completing as a class. They began to research their objects today so parents, feel free to ask your child what they learned about their space object today.
