Happy Friday Titans! It is also the last day of September! Write your favourite thing about September in your post. We had a great day that was very productive. Division 5 picked their players for our Hockey Math Pool and prepared their graphs to record statistics. They started to make real progress with their personal Timelines for Social Studies as well.
In the afternoon, we spent some quality time with our buddies, skipping and reading out in the sunshine. Lastly, Joel did some more teaching about anime art...you could have heard a pin drop! It was so quiet while the students worked that it was easy to see how engaged they were. One thing that we also did today was discuss indian residential schools. We watched a few videos and read Shi-Shi-Etko. Today was orange shirt day which shows support for those who have been affected by residential schools. As this is a very large and complex topic, we barely scratched the surface of the effects of these schools on Canada's Aboriginal people. The students were very respectful during these conversations and had a lot of great comments. Homework: Math 6: finish # 3, 4, 6 if not already done for Monday (try them!) Continue to do some basic division facts by searching division games on google. Post the link of any good ones in the comments below. Above you can see all of Div 5, tired out after running in the Terry Fox run! I'm glad I was able to make it into the photo :) The students did an amazing job, persevering even when they were tired. They were all TITANS! Math 6: Try questions 2, 3, 4, and 6 on pg 84. Google "Division Derby" and click on the first link (math playground). Find a division game and play a few rounds to practice basic division skills. Watch the video below for a reminder on how to divide. Write a few sentences about what you think the book was trying to say. Think about a time when you "endeavoured" and were so glad that you did, or a time that you didn't endeavour, and wish you had. Ms. Hurtubise showed me this picture....so accurate! I had a good laugh, and hopefully you do too! Today we worked hard on many things such as our acrostic poems (which are due tomorrow), our Terry Fox shoes (also due tomorrow) and Math! Grade 6's practiced finding the factors of a variety of numbers to improve their factoring skills.
Homework: Math 6: Do corrections on quiz and Prime and Composite Numbers sheet. Play the math games on the links below to practice your factors! Try at least TWO of the games. Then, comment on my website and provide a factoring question for the other grade 6's to answer. Answer at least TWO other students' questions. I will put an example in the comments section. Factoring is Fun! Math 7: See your teachers' website LA: Acrostic Poems due Tomorrow Terry Fox Shoe coloured for Thursday-Bring $2 so we can reach our class goal! Bring $2 for Terry Fox run-Class goal is $2 per person! Student Verification sheet returned if not already done Green PAC form filled out and returned. P.A.R.: Think of a time (besides yesterday) that you were faced with a problem and you persevered! How did the problem make you feel, and what made you persevere? Several students said yesterday that seeing other students succeed at the problem let them know that it was solvable and that helped them to continue. What helps you persevere? It was so interesting watching the students try to solve the problem that they are working on in the picture above. Many of them became frustrated right away but persevered and surprised themselves when they were able to solve it! The problem was not a math problem but one that required them to move numbers around to logical positions. It was very excited to see how excited they got when they found the answer!

What did you do when you felt frustrated? If you solved it, how did it feel when you solved it? What strategies did you use? The excitement was high in Division 5 today with students looking forward to the Amazing Race tonight. That didn't stop us from getting a lot done though! This morning we started our Hockey Math unit by coming up with our own team names and creating a jersey for our team. Next week we will pick our players and create graphs on which we will keep track of our players points.
We also practiced being CEO's by going over two different resumes and picking out what we thought was good and what needed improvement. The students did an excellent job recognizing what was relevant information and that EDITING is very important when applying for a job. REMINDERS: BE HERE AT 5:30 SHARP. PIZZA WILL BE SERVED AT 5:30 AND THE RACE WILL START AT 6:00. WE WILL START EXACTLY ON TIME!!! If your parents are volunteering, please have them come at 5:30 also and we will show them which station they are at. Social Studies: Have your life events for Tuesday-one for each year you've been alive P.A.R.: Relax. No P.A.R. tonight :) This morning after Daily Practice the students conducted research about resumes (rez-oom-ays). They learned about what makes a good resume and what makes a bad resume, as well as all the things that a good resume should have. In the picture above, what do you think the person needed to improve on their resume?
During Art today, Joel carried on his unit about Anime Art. The students learned how to draw clothing for their anime characters and add more features and details. They were very focused on their work and learned a great deal from Joel! Homework: Math 6: Finish your 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3 workbook sheets for Tuesday. Jot down some notes about some of your major life events. Write down one detailed event that happened to you for each year of your life. Also, try to find a photo of you from each year! Either bring it to school or take a picture of it and save it to your google drive. P.A.R.: Post a question that you have for last years' grade 7's. Ask them things that you want to know about grade 7 (if you're grade 6) or grade 8 (if you're grade 7). Each student most post at least ONE question. These will be answered by my grade 7's from last year! Today Division 5 had a productive day. In the morning the students got right to work on their Daily Practice without me having to ask. I was very impressed! They showed me how Titans start their day:) See below for our super cheesy video about Timelines Happy Monday students! Today our band students got to find out which instruments they will be playing this year and they are very excited to get started. During Language Arts we started to write our acrostic poems about what it means to be a Hillcrest Titan. The students brainstormed many positive traits like "positive, trustworthy, honest, respectful." They then formed these into poems. Once completed we will type them out and post them on our wall as a reminder about what it means to us to be Titans.
During gym the students had to work in teams to try to move their whole team across the gym without anyone touching the floor. It was an exercise that required concentration, communication, and a plan. The girls in our class definitely beat the boys! Math 6: pg. 72 #1, 3, 5, 7 and #11 is a bonus Math 7 Middleton: pg. 6 #1, 2 Math 7 Van: pg. 6 #4, 7, 10 Reminders: Amazing Race permission form due tomorrow Scholastic Orders due September 28th P.A.R.: What's one thing you would like to share with your parents/guardians tonight at Meet the Teacher night? The students ended the first full week in an excellent fashion. In the morning we had our first assembly of the year and the kids totally demonstrated what it means to be Titans. They listened respectfully during the presentations and set a great example for our younger students.
After our read aloud the students brainstormed answers to two questions: 1. What helps you learn? 2. What keeps you from learning? We used the answers to come up with our class expectations so that we can all know how other students learn and we can be respectful of individual learning needs. After lunch Mrs. Chapman showed the students how to create their library card pockets. Lastly, our very own Joel Baker taught the class a lesson on the basics of drawing anime art. We are just getting started but I know the end products will be amazing! Joel did such a great job of teaching the class. Many students commented on how they normally aren't very good at art but the way Joel taught it made it very easy for them to follow and they all felt successful! Maybe he should be a teacher one day.... Homework: 1. Grade 6 Immunization Consent Forms signed and returned 2. Amazing Race Notice and $5.00 due Tuesday, September 20th 3. Any other notice that you have not returned (yellow and green ones) 4. PAR Reminders: Scholastic Orders due September 28th!
