Today we had French and listened to a French song. We were pretty surprised to find out the true meaning of the song Alouette! Mrs. Wood visited our class and talked about the Hillcrest community, connecting land and place. It was interesting to learn that Hillcrest is in the centre of our community. In the afternoon, Mya and Shylee continued teaching us and we kept working on our art project and we're almost done. See our class instagram to see photos of our art!

Today, Div. 2 did a three column note taking activity on global warming. We also connected our Ghost of Spirit Bear read aloud to our circle of courage. Lastly, in gym we had our second to last gymnastics session.
No reminders today P.A.R. What was one thing you noted in your Circle of Courage about Cole and Peter? How did one of them (or both) demonstrate independence, mastery, belonging, or generosity? Be specific. Today we had Buddies and started the construction of our Cardboard Challenge. We also read a narrative non-fiction picture book called The Seal Garden. Mya also directed the art project that we are almost done.
Reminders: Bring cardboard if you have not yet and still need to. P.A.R.: What is your favourite sweet treat? Division 2 has started a couple new units in the last couple of weeks. In Science we are learning about Evolution, and specifically focusing on Natural Selection the last couple of days. It's been interesting learning about how both nature and humans selectively breed plants and animals to develop desired traits.
In Language Arts we will be making our own Non-Fiction Picture Books. Students will be picking a topic that they enjoy and researching it. They will then create a picture book to teach grade 3/4's about their topic. The beginning stages entail lots of note taking and learning about the various text features used in non-fiction writing to help teach the reader. In math we have started to subtract integers, which is a little trickier than adding integers, but the students have been persevering and trying different strategies. I have even shared my Tick Tick Trick with them for subtracting negative integers. Parents, feel free to ask your child some questions about what they are learning! They've had a great start to Term 2. Reminders: Please bring in all your items and cardboard for the cardboard challenge with our Buddies on Friday. Math: Back of Subtracting Integer worksheet P.A.R.: What challenges has Cole faced since returning from the island in Alaska? In Touching Spirit Bear, Cole spent much of the book learning how to control his anger. What strategies has he tried to control his anger since coming home? Write a paragraph (3-5 sentences) explaining the challenges he has faced, how he has tried to adjust to life off the island, and what you think he needs to do to deal with the challenges he is facing. What would you do in his situation? Also, feel free to share any connections you may have made between TSB and Ghost of Spirit Bear. Today Div. 2 had a short visit from Amanda from Y.W.C.A. She talked to us about an after school program that is for grade 7's at Salish Secondary. Also, we had our adding integers mid-chapter quiz. Lastly, Mya and Shylee started to teach the class an art project using watercolours!

We went outside for a frolic in the snow after working on our Touching Spirit Bear projects. Between recess and lunch, we met with all of the grade 7's and discussed the theme and food for the Grade 7 celebration in June. Then we practiced our skills with Orbit Integers, an online game that allowed us to challenge each other in a spaceship race, and by answering questions correctly, we were able to speed to the finish line! The student record to beat is 52.9 seconds. See if you can beat it here https://www.mathplayground.com/ASB_OrbitIntegers.html The teacher score to beat is 51.19! If you can beat my score, take a screenshot and show it to me. Maybe there will be a prize!
