Hi Class! Today we were very productive. In the morning we worked on Hockey Math and students picked the team that they think will win the Stanley Cup! Whoever guesses the most results right will win a jar of candy!
We also updated our Freshgrade and commented on our Hand Art, which was due today. Ask your child to show you the picture of their completed art! Between recess and lunch we began to do research on what some of the various causes of poverty are. Students found some very scary numbers, like 21,000 children die every. single. day. due to poverty. Finally, in the afternoon we finished the Lion King with our buddy class:) It was a great way to learn about the Circle of Life, relate it to our Circle of Courage learning, and finish off the week. Math 7: Half of each of the two worksheets, due Monday. Test is Tuesday. Math 6: See your teachers' website. Reminders: Scholastic Orders due April 7th Summer Learning (grade 6) and Summer Transitions (grade 7) applications due Friday, April 7th P.A.R.: Relate the Lion King to our Circle of Courage. Division 5 has been having some phenomenal discussions about poverty over the last couple of days. This morning in groups we looked at what some possible causes for poverty were. We then tallied up how many of those causes were due to poor financial decisions and how many were due to things that are outside many people's control. To close our day, the students each wrote an opinion piece where they had to argue a perspective. They either had to argue why they believed that the majority of people living in poverty are doing so because of their own actions, or they had to argue why they thought that the majority of people living in poverty are doing so for reasons outside of their control.
Math 7: half of each worksheet, due Monday. Our test on multiplying and dividing integers, and order of operations will be on Tuesday. Math 6: See your teachers' website. Hand Art: Due tomorrow Reminders: Scholastic Orders due April 7th Summer Learning (grade 6) and Summer Transitions (grade 7) applications due Friday, April 7th P.A.R.: You will be having a very respectful debate. Evens: You will be arguing that the majority of poverty is most people's own fault Odds: You will be arguing that the majority of poverty is NOT most people's own fault You need to state your position, and then respectfully disagree with your opponents. You must respond to AT LEAST TWO people. Today Division 5 had some fantastic conversations about relative poverty and absolute poverty. The class discussed the possible definitions of each and then came up with examples. From our conversations we decided that absolute poverty means struggling for even the basic needs like food, fresh water and shelter. Relative poverty was dependent on a comparison. For example, we discussed that in our class, Mr. Stewart is tall, but relative to Lebron James, I am quite short. It depends what we are comparing to.
Math 7: Order of Operations worksheet, front and back. Don't do the exponent questions unless you want to challenge yourself! Math 6: See your teachers' website. Art: Hand Art due Friday! Ensure you have taken a picture of it and uploaded it to FreshGrade P.A.R.: 1. Give an example of a comparison of how something is relative. For example, an apple is sweet, but relative to a can of Coke, it is not very sweet. Come up with your own, but try to make it a comparison that involves poverty. 2. Give feedback to at least one other student on how they can improve their response. We had such a great conversation this afternoon about poverty. We watched the new remake of "Where is the Love?" by the Black Eyed Peas, this time featuring many famous artists! Students brainstormed what the themes of the video could be and they came up with some amazing ideas. Tomorrow we will continue our class discussion and delve more into what poverty is.
Math 7: Complete half of the questions on each side of the worksheet. Math 6: See your teachers' website. Art: Hand Art good copy is due on Friday. P.A.R.; 1.What do you think poverty is? 2. Now that Charlotte and Megan had their chance to write the blurb, Mr. Stewart will elaborate. When they said "jkhcegyhchgvxeywcrtyubzqwvycrtutbyuxuielhrfk, vbs, vjfg.fvdgfjvwg" they meant that in the morning we did some coding, between recess and lunch we did a math test, and after lunch we had Jump Rope for Heart outside!
