Today we had quite the day! In the morning after band we participated in the Halloween Parade with all of the other classes. In the afternoon we had our Halloween Party. Levi, Lillian and Madison performed a dance for us and we had a dance competition. There was a lot of food, both nutritional and not-so-nutritional. Thank you so much to the Halloween Committee for putting this together for us!

Math 7: See your teachers' website. Social Studies: Ancestral Essay due Wednesday, November 8th INTERIMS (Because I still haven't gotten most of them back!) ****If your parents are having trouble logging on, have them go back to the invitation email that I sent them originally. They then create an account from there. If they can't find it, let me know tomorrow and I will resend the invite to them. Go over your interim with your parents and show off your FreshGrade portfolios! Have your parents comment on a few of the activities. Please remember that parent comments are most beneficial when they are specific. Some good sentence starters could be: I really like how you did..... I am proud of how you.... I noticed you were approaching expectations on.....I wonder if you could have ....(This not only points out an area that needs improvement, but offers a suggestion for making it better.) "In your reflection, you said you needed to work harder to prepare for your math test. How will you do this? Maybe next time I could help quiz you." These are just a few examples to help get you started but the important thing is that parents and their children are sitting down to discuss the learning that is taking place. P.A.R.: No required post tonight.

Today the students were introduced to the Circle of Courage. We talked briefly about the four directions: Generosity, Mastery, Belonging and Independence. We brainstormed what some of the traits could be that would belong to each of these four directions but noticed that some traits can fit under more than one category. We will be picking this up again next week as we learn more about our identity's.

Why do you think these traits that we discussed tended to fit into more than one category? This afternoon we had one of my former students, Mr. Ryan Arnouk come in and teach the basics of coding to our students. He talked to us about the different languages of code and showed us some of his web creations. Does anyone remember what the two best languages are for creating gaming software?

Today was a wet day with recess taking place inside but fortunately the rain stopped long enough that we were able to go outside at lunch! During gym time the students impressed me with their ability to line up outside the gym so well and so they got to choose what we played. We ended up playing some serious Dr. Dodgeball!

P.A.R.: What is your favourite thing to do on a rainy day? Yesterday's question on the blog post asked "What helps you learn?" As I read through the responses last night I found two very common things: 1. Most of the students preferred silent or quiet working environments to learn their best and 2. Many like to listen to music to allow them to focus while working. This realization caused me to make a change as a teacher. This morning I told the students that they could listen to music whenever they like, as long as I'm not giving instructions. They no longer have to ask to listen to music. This is a big shift for me as in the past I have been more restrictive on the use of devices during work time because I thought they might distract students instead of helping them. Our second block this morning we worked on our spooky Hallowe'en stories and I was quickly shown that my shift was a positive one! The students worked for nearly an hour straight in near total silence without me having to ask them even once to focus or get back on task. Afterwards I surveyed them and asked what they thought about their work time and all of the responses were that they felt that they were very productive. I learned a lot from the students' posts and it was interesting to see how applying their feedback really benefitted their learning. Math 6: If you chose page one on your worksheet, do 33 questions. If you chose page 2, do 8 questions. If you chose page 3, do 7 questions. Feel free to try a few that you find challenging! Math 7: See your teachers' websites. P.AR.: How did the change in music policy affect your learning today? Please answer in detail. Today our whole school partook in D.E.A.R: Drop Everything And Read! Students and teachers lined the halls and classrooms reading some of their favourite books! Even Mr. Stewart put his work down for 30 minutes and read along with the class. Write how many sprints you did in your post. In Math grade 6's were introduced to the basics of multiplying decimals. Tomorrow we will be practicing long multiplication!
Math 6: Do the 5 practice questions from the board today. If you are having difficulty with multiplication, do some of the practice questions in the games on this website. What helps you learn? Today the students had a relatively productive day where we worked diligently on our Halloween stories which are due next Friday. I had a chance to read some of them and they are really suspenseful! I look forward to reading them all. We also worked hard on our Hockey Math, collecting the latest statistics about our players. On Friday, December 2nd my uncle, Darcy Rota will be coming in to speak to our class about leadership, perseverance, and grit and hopefully share some of his stats as well. In the afternoon we completed our FreshGrade Fill Up. Students uploaded pictures of their math tests (except six Grade 7 students who do not have theirs in hand yet) and everyone commented on their tests. They also set reading and math goals for themselves for this term using SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely). Their goals should be specific and attainable and definitely measurable; otherwise you wouldn't know if you achieved it! Math 6: If you are planning on doing the rewrite on Tuesday at lunchtime, do your corrections on your test for Monday. Please do not just say "Ancestral Essay cuz it's cool." Try to explain something you've learned and why you found it interesting. 2. Make a suggestion for how we can improve our family meetings as our current format does not seem to be working very well. How can we make it better? Yesterday afternoon we discussed examples of open, thoughtful questions. Here are some examples that we came up with:
What holidays did you celebrate and how did you celebrate them/what were some of your traditions? What was it like growing up with 3 sisters and 1 brother under one roof? What were your thoughts on the war? What was the reasoning behind moving from the Ukraine to Alberta? What is one word you would use to describe her and why? The questions should allow the answer to be told as a story instead of a one word answer such as "Did you like living there? What is your birthdate? How many siblings do you have?" Math 6: Have a night off:) If I've already spoken to you about a rewrite, consider doing some practice questions. I will try to have the rewrite ready for Monday. Math 7: Night off:) LA: Resumes due TOMORROW morning, printed out and on my desk. If you do not have a printer, we can print them during recess. Halloween Story due October 28th Reminders: Scholastic orders due Monday October 24th Art Cards due November 1st P.A.R.: Both grade 7's and 6's have written math tests in the last two days. Naturally, you will be expected to comment on your FreshGrade about how you did. Write a sample comment that someone might write. It does not have to be based off of your actual performance. It could comment about how hard you studied, how much effort you put in, if you did it to the best of your ability, etc. Don't forget about our Growth Mindset and the power of "yet." Please explain how the above cartoon is a metaphor. Today we discussed metaphors and similes in relation to our Hallowe'en stories that we are writing. Grade 7 students buckled down and wrote their math tests while our grade 6's studied for their tests which are tomorrow. Good luck everyone!
