Today marked the end of Mrs. B's month long practicum with us. To celebrate her successful completion we had a class party this morning, followed by a pizza lunch provided by Mrs. B. We wish her success in the rest of her program and look forward to working with her again one day.
Between recess and lunch our students helped their little buddies to work on their kites. They are really starting to come along! This afternoon most of division 5 finished their kites as well. What can we do to make positive changes in our class? Today was a busy day for Division 5. In the morning after Daily Practice we wrote a journal about a time that we did something for someone else that went unappreciated. We then brainstormed a list of feelings that come up in a scenario like that (listed in the photo above). It really showed how our actions, even small ones, can affect other people in a negative way. Lillian also made an excellent connection to the Circle of Courage and how all of these feelings would be on the outside of our circle. All of this is related to gratitude. In talking about poverty and those affected by poverty, it is easier to see the things that we take for granted. Recognizing that taking for granted the people around us can make them experience some of the feelings listed above.

What a beautiful day on which to end the week! This morning Division 5 collected their newest hockey stats for Hockey Math. Already Columbus, Chicago and Calgary are knocked out of the playoffs. The next few days will show us the remaining winners of round 1 before we move on to round 2.
Between recess and lunch we teamed up with our buddy class and came up with some good suggestions for students to hear on announcements, and we also did some buddy reading outside. It was too nice NOT to go outside! In the afternoon we watched several Hillcrest classes present their choreographed dances to the rest of the school. They clearly worked very hard on these dances! Today the grade 7's voted on who they want to be their Titan of the Year, which is a great honour!
Afterwards, students selected their first, second, and third choices for our Explorations unit which will start next week. Some of the choices are art, baking, coding, knitting, and orienteering! Students will be informed next week of which choice they got. Math 6: Find one rectangular object in your house and determine it's area. Also, complete Area of Rectangles worksheet. Due Monday. Give an example of each. Today we started our morning with "The Scottish Servants," a whodunnit logic puzzle that was somewhat challenging! It was fantastic to see the students persevere and even better when I saw the look of joy and accomplishment on their faces when they finally solved it. After recess we joined up with Mrs. Scott's class and we all played cribbage! Our class learned the basics last week and Mrs. Scott's class has been playing since before Christmas so it was a great opportunity for the younger students to teach some of the older students. In the afternoon during gym, we started our gymnastics unit. The students became reacquainted with the equipment and safety rules, then started to have some fun. Welcome back Division 5! I hope everyone had an excellent Easter long weekend!
This morning we started writing our new opinion piece about whether or not clean drinking water should be a basic human right. Students will be stating that YES, they do think clean water should be a basic right or NO, it should not be a basic human right. Then then need to back up their argument with reasons. In the afternoon the class partnered up with Division 3 and played Stopball in the gym. Thank you for including us Division 3! Math 6: # 4, pg 276 Math 7: See your teachers' website. This morning division 5 had some amazing conversations about Mastery from our Circle of Courage. We watched "Show us the Way" by N'we Jinan, a group of Aboriginal youth from Surrey. The video was extremely inspiring and demonstrated many examples of Mastery. It also lead to a deep discussion about stereotypes, Aboriginal culture and beliefs, and a way of being. Math 6: Complete area booklet Math 7: See your teachers' website. Reminders: Scholastic Orders due April 29th Early Dismissal day Thursday, April 27th! If parents wish to make an appointment to meet with me, they are welcome to email me at [email protected] to arrange a meeting. P.A.R.: Hi Class. As I was driving home I saw a family packing up to go camping for the weekend and I thought to myself, that would be fun... So, I have changed my mind about the post. There is no P.A.R. this weekend. We will do the debate next week. Have a great Easter. This morning Div 5 persevered through a challenging whodunnit mystery! It was really enjoyable to watch students try to determine the answer to the logic problem they were faced with.
After French the students partnered up and developed some questions around an article entitled Jobless in Canada. Some of the questions that they came up with were very deep and thought provoking. We plan to answer them in the next few days (after Easter:) This afternoon all of the students who aren't in band stayed in the classroom and I began to teach them how to play cribbage (crib). This is definitely a challenging game but they were showing signs of getting the hang of it. We will be playing this now during band time until the students understand it and are able to play on their own. Reminders: Scholastic Orders due April 29th Early Dismissal day Thursday, April 27th! If parents wish to make an appointment to meet with me, they are welcome to email me at [email protected] to arrange a meeting. P.A.R.: 1.What was one of the questions you developed while working with the article, "Jobless in Canada" today? 2. Spend 5 minutes (no more) researching the answer to your question, then include the answer in your post. |
